Features: Since the reform and opening-up, profound changes have been occurring in urban and rural families in China. The traditional patriarchal family system is fading away, being replaced by a new family structure with greater equality and independence among family members. This book employs a combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis methods to conduct an in-depth investigation and comparison of the transformations in China's urban and rural families since the 1990s, under the backdrop of the market economy and non-agriculturalization, from aspects such as family functions, family relationships, and norms of marital behavior. On this basis, it explores the relevant theories of family sociology in a meaningful way. Unlike previous studies in this field, this book also pays necessary attention to the reverse effects of family changes on social development and conducts original research on these effects from the perspective of family strategies. It introduces the concept of "community emotional norms" (community qingli), emphasizing the influence of the subculture characterized by community emotional norms on the transformation of rural family systems.
