Features: Anton Pavlovich Chekhov is undoubtedly an outstanding representative of Russian classical literature. As early as the early 20th century, his works were introduced to China. In 1907, shortly after Chekhov's death, Wu Zhao translated "The Priest in Black" from Japanese and introduced it to Chinese readers. Two years later, in 1909, the collection "Foreign Tales" co-translated by Zhou Zuoren and Zhou Shuren was published, which included two short stories by Chekhov: "In the Manor" and "In Exile." In the "Biographical Notes" attached to the book, the translators also provided an introduction to Chekhov, describing him as "a university graduate, a physician," "someone who had experienced the world and benefited from scientific thinking, with extremely sharp understanding," "who wrote several plays and over a hundred short stories, depicting the decline of the human spirit in the reactionary era of the time, with exquisite artistry," and also saying that "although he was pessimistic about the present world, he still held hope for the future." Although brief, this introduction outlines some characteristics of Chekhov and his works. This book introduces Chekhov from three aspects: his character, his creative works, and his artistry. More than a century has passed since Chekhov left this world. His novels and plays have withstood the test of time, becoming invaluable treasures and precious legacies in the world's literary canon. As an outstanding artist and historical figure, Chekhov's path of growth and development is highly instructive. Chekhov's life has left people with many insights: artists should have a strong sense of social responsibility, writers must possess a correct and progressive worldview, and writers must tirelessly explore.
