Features: On a day in December BC 207, under the severe winter cold, Xiang Yu led the main force of the Chu army to the banks of the Zhanghe River. The Zhanghe River originates in the northern part of the Shangdang Prefecture, flows through the Handan Prefecture and the Julu Prefecture before entering the Yellow River. Xiang Yu first ordered the soldiers to rest on the spot, while he himself took two attendants and walked along the riverbank. Although it was winter, the river surface had not frozen, though there was a slight layer of ice on the banks. Xiang Yu raised his hand to shade his eyes and looked across the river—the misty air revealed village houses and trees, and faint barking of dogs could be heard. The opposite bank belonged to the territory of the Handan Prefecture. It seemed he could see the capital of Zhao, Handan, which had been destroyed by Zhang Han, the broken walls reduced to ruins, the burned-out palaces, the farmhouses emitting black smoke, and the crowds of Handan people forced to leave their homeland.
