Features: What is the neonatal period? The neonatal period refers to the time from birth to the 28th day after birth. This is a special period where the newborn transitions from the maternal body to an independent living environment. The organs need further development, and functions require significant adjustments for survival. Therefore, the ability to adapt to the external environment is poor, and resistance is weak. If feeding and care are not properly managed, it is easy to cause illness. To ensure the healthy growth of newborns, it is essential to have a clear understanding of their physiological characteristics, special physiological states, and common abnormal phenomena, as well as to provide proper care, feeding, and disease prevention, thereby ensuring the healthy growth of newborns.
Characteristics of a newborn infant Your newborn may look very different from what you imagined: small and red; the head may seem too large compared to the rest of the body. If you observe him closely, you may notice several unexpected phenomena: he might suddenly tremble for no reason; he might make a stuffy sound, making you wonder if his nose or breathing passages are blocked; he might even stop breathing completely for several seconds. These are actually all normal. By carefully observing your baby for the first two or three days of life, you will become familiar with the normal activities of an infant and accustomed to your baby's unique personality. What is most important is that you understand the various signals he sends you, and the only way to do this is to spend as much time with him as possible, taking care of him, playing with him, and caring for him. Your baby will be very happy with the attention he receives. For a baby who has just entered the world, the more attention you give him, the better.
All newborns have certain physical characteristics, which, although completely normal, can easily cause parents to worry, especially first-time parents. If you are aware of these, it will help reduce any anxiety you may have.
General proportions The proportions of your baby's body may seem strange at first glance. His abdomen is round and even appears swollen, and his head is relatively large compared to the rest of his body. In contrast, his arms and legs look like sticks, but there is no need to worry—such proportions are completely normal.
Head shape The baby's head is not perfectly round immediately after birth, even though it may look uneven or swollen. However, this does not mean that the brain is damaged. This is due to the unique structure of the skull, which can move and overlap during birth, allowing the head to pass smoothly through the birth canal. Sometimes, one or both sides of the baby's head may have large, firm bumps that persist. These bumps are called "cranial hematomas" and are caused by the natural pressure of uterine muscle contractions during delivery. They are bruises on the scalp, outside the skull, and do not press on the baby's brain. They will naturally subside within a few weeks without treatment. Forceps delivery often results in bruises, which may appear as shallow indentations on either side of the head. These indentations will disappear within a few days.
Anterior fontanelle The anterior fontanelle is the soft spot on the top of a newborn's head, where the cranial bones have not yet fused. It typically closes around the age of two. The scalp covers the
