Features: Linguistics, as an ancient yet young discipline, holds a significant position in the history of human civilization and the development of science, as well as in the entire humanities and social sciences system. Especially in today's rapidly advancing computer science and information science, linguistics, as a leading discipline, demonstrates its evident importance and critical role. Currently, with the continuous development of China's economy, society, and modern science and technology, the field of linguistics is entering a new phase more conducive to academic prosperity and theoretical innovation. Timely compilation of the China Language Annual to objectively review and comprehensively reflect the research achievements and developmental trajectories of linguistics in different periods, as well as the progress of its various branches, is a fundamental and meaningful task for further promoting discipline construction and advancing academic development. The compilation and publication of the China Language Annual began in the early 1990s. At that time, this work was carried out under the personal advocacy and guidance of the renowned linguist, Professor Lu Shuxiang. Since 1993, the China Education Press has successively published the China Language Annual (a three-volume set covering 1992–1994), edited by Professor Li Xingjian, and the China Language Annual (two-volume set covering 1995–1998), edited by Professor Lin Lintong and Professor Gu Shixi. Subsequently, due to certain objective reasons, this work was temporarily suspended. Until 2003, to continue this work, which had garnered widespread attention and support from scholars, and to better meet the needs of the linguistics community and society, the Institute of Linguistics of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences decided to establish an editorial committee in the form of a research team. In the second half of 2003, the institute began organizing the compilation of the China Language Annual (1999–2003). This annual reflects and records research achievements, academic dynamics, and related materials from 1998 to 2002.
