Features: La Dame aux Camélias was written in 1848 and is a masterpiece by Alexandre Dumas fils. La Dame aux Camélias depicts the love tragedy of a courtesan, drawing inspiration from the real story of a prostitute in Paris at the time. According to research, this prostitute was named Marie Duplessis. Due to poverty, she ran away from home to Paris at the age of fifteen. With her natural intelligence, she began to frequent the grand dance halls of Paris and became a target for wealthy men and nobles to pursue. Later, she exchanged her beauty and body for a luxurious lifestyle. Eventually, she fell ill with tuberculosis due to excessive drinking, revelry, and unrestrained sexual indulgence, and died from coughing up blood at the young age of twenty-three.
The protagonist of the novel, Marguerite, was originally a poor country girl who came to Paris to earn a living. Unfortunatly, she fell into the world of prostitution and developed a habit of extravagance. She indulged in pleasure to numb herself, but inwardly, she despised this hollow life. This fallen woman, who still retained a pure heart, longed for genuine love. Later, she was moved by the sincere heart of Armand and fell deeply in love with him. They lived a happy pastoral life in the countryside, far from the bustling streets of Paris. Marguerite's wounded heart began to heal, and she resolved to completely change her past ways and spend a truly normal woman's life with Armand.
However, the arrival of Armand's father shattered her dream. His hypocrisy and selfishness once again pushed Marguerite into disaster. She was forced to leave Armand and later subjected to his ignorant insults and harm. Eventually, she died from exhaustion and heartbreak.
In relationships like ours, if a woman still wishes to retain a shred of dignity, she must make the necessary sacrifices, rather than ask for money from her lover and tarnish her love with greed. For a woman like me, love must be tied to the heart—it is such a fragile bond. I don’t want your diamond ring; I just want you to love me.
