Molecular Biology of Insect Viruses

Author: Lü Hongsheng
Publisher:
Publish Date: 1998-01-01
Features: This book is a systematic monograph on insect virus molecular biology in China, detailing the structure and function of insect virus genomes, gene expression, and molecular regulation of virus production, revealing the essence of viral molecular pathology. Building on a comprehensive discussion of various insect virus molecular biology theories, it delves into the molecular biology of baculoviruses, gene manipulation techniques, the use of baculovirus expression vector systems to produce recombinant proteins, and the development and application of genetic engineering virus insecticides. The book is divided into seven parts and thirty chapters.
Part I is the foundation of molecular biology, briefly introducing the history and scope of insect virus molecular biology before thoroughly discussing the molecular biology fundamentals of insect virus gene structure and function, expression, and regulation. Parts II, III, and IV discuss the molecular biology and molecular pathology of insect baculoviruses, insect DNA viruses, and insect RNA viruses, respectively, revealing the nature of viruses at the molecular level and laying a theoretical foundation for later discussions on insect virus genome manipulation and the application of genetic engineering viruses to control plant pests.
Part V discusses insect virus gene manipulation, focusing on baculovirus gene manipulation methods while introducing newly developed gene manipulation technologies such as genomic linearization, YACs, and transposons in the application of insect virus genetic engineering. Part VI discusses recombinant baculoviruses as foreign gene expression vectors and their applications, including the theory and methods of producing recombinant proteins using baculovirus expression systems, the processing and transport of recombinant proteins, and the commercial production of engineered proteins and subunit vaccines.
Part VII discusses recombinant baculoviruses as engineered insecticides, covering how gene manipulation techniques can be used to develop engineered virus insecticides and related large-scale field applications and monitoring. The book contains approximately 1.5 million words and over 200 illustrations. It is suitable for teachers, graduate and undergraduate students in relevant disciplines of major universities, as well as researchers in scientific research institutions.
