Author: Qian Guren, Editor-in-Chief
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2003-01-01
Features: This book is a textbook for the Chinese Modern and Contemporary Literature course in Chinese departments of universities across the country. It consists of two volumes and four books. The upper volume selects modern Chinese literary works, while the lower volume selects contemporary Chinese literary works. Each volume is divided into two books: (1) for fiction, and (2) for poetry, prose, and drama. They are arranged in chronological order of publication, but works of the same genre by a single author are relatively grouped together for teaching convenience. The selected works in this book are all outstanding or representative pieces from various schools and styles since the May Fourth Movement. Through teaching, students will improve their ability to analyze and appreciate modern and contemporary Chinese literary works and gain an understanding of the basic landscape of modern and contemporary Chinese literature. Considering the limited scope of this book, some works from certain schools are inevitably omitted, and multi-act dramas are selected to include only one act or listed as supplementary material. Long novels, long narrative poems, and middle-length novels by the principal are generally listed as supplementary material. The selected works in this book are all based on their original published versions to preserve historical authenticity. Some works have been revised by the authors later, showing improvements in both thought and art compared to their initial publications. Some authors prefer to use the revised versions, but for consistency in style, we kindly ask for their understanding.
