Features: Landscape photography is the reproduction of natural and man-made scenery, a momentary record of changing weather conditions. It is the result of combining photographic techniques with magnificent scenery and, at the same time, an artistic creation that stimulates visual thinking and emotional expression. This is the general activity pattern of landscape photography. Landscape photography became popular in China in the 1930s. Through the diligent efforts, perseverance, and pursuit of the older generation of photographers, many excellent works with national styles were produced. This is closely related to the long-standing tradition in Chinese literary and artistic traditions of depicting nature. In the treasure trove of Chinese culture and art, numerous masterpieces that take the universe as their subject and natural elements as their material, creating works that blend poetry and painting, have been produced. However, to date, the artistic achievements of Chinese landscape photography still fall far short of the highest achievements of classical poetry and paintings in China's artistic heritage. Even in directly capturing famous mountains, rivers, and splendid landscapes, there is still room for improvement and further effort.
Landscape photography, in terms of its creative process, is relatively challenging. It requires not only multidimensional visual thinking, artistic conception, aesthetic perspectives, and skilled techniques but also the relentless pursuit of paths and mountains others have not traversed. In all kinds of weather conditions—from scorching sun to freezing snow—the photographer must explore, seek angles, deliberate on choices, and seize the moment to complete the creation. In other words, landscape photography involves capturing the essence of natural scenery and the ever-changing light and weather through the author's arduous labor and superior techniques, forming a beautiful image that conveys the meaning of "how magnificent our country is." It inspires readers' longing for nature and evokes passion for their homeland.
From the perspective of subject matter, landscape photography belongs to the same category as portrait photography, news photography, sports photography, stage photography, still-life photography, and night photography. It can also be considered a subgenre within the broader field of photography. In terms of the specific scenes it depicts, it can be broadly divided into two major categories: natural landscapes and cultural landscapes.
Natural landscapes include mountains, plains, grasslands, rivers, lakes, oceans, forests, flowers, deserts, and meteorological phenomena, among others. Examples include Huangshan in Anhui and Wulingyuan in Hunan. These scenic areas have little or no trace of artificial modification, often retaining a primitive wildness. Cultural landscapes, on the other hand, refer to scenic areas composed of gardens, buildings, flowers, historical sites, and the like. These are mostly created through artificial modification, transformation, decoration, and construction. Examples include West Lake in Hangzhou, the gardens of Suzhou, the Summer Palace in Beijing, and the Chengde Mountain Resort. Although these landscapes are often situated in high mountains or near water, they are all man-made. Some people also classify landscapes into "urban landscapes," "rural landscapes," "oceanic landscapes," and "construction landscapes." Upon closer examination, however, whether in cities or rural areas, all types of landscapes fall within the scope of artificial and natural elements. Therefore, distinguishing between cultural and natural landscapes is more appropriate.
Landscape photography is not an unattainable goal for any photography enthusiast. With interest, conditions, determination, a willingness to study and persevere, success is possible. In today's era of rampant tourism, attracted by the inherent charm of landscapes, more and more people are joining the world of landscape photography, making the exploration of landscape photography techniques a hot topic.
