1. The 3,500 characters collected in this manual are based on the "Common Characters List of Modern Chinese" jointly released by the National Language Work Committee and the Ministry of Education in March 1988.
2. The four-corner number system used is based on the "New Four-Corner Number Dictionary" (Ninth Revised and Reprinted Edition) published by the Commercial Press in 1985.
3. The forms of characters in this manual are based on the "Simplified Characters Directory," the "List for the Standardization of Variant Characters," and the "General Printable Character Forms List." The simplified forms are used as character heads for ease of recognizing traditional characters and for quick reference; where traditional characters are included, they are appended to the simplified form with brackets [].
4. The phonetic annotations for characters are selected from the "New Four-Corner Number Dictionary." The phonetic index is used as the standard.
5. The traditional characters used in this manual are all in their traditional forms, with sources cited, and are selected from the calligraphy of Mr. Huaren De.
6. For characters with multiple pronunciations and meanings, only one pronunciation and meaning are selected. Readers are advised to use with caution.
7. To facilitate character lookup, an "Alphabetical Index" and a "Stroke and Number Index" are compiled at the end of the main text.
