Explanation of the U.S. Scribner Log Rule
This volume table is the modified Scribner Log Rule of the United States, revised in July 1972.
1. Volume Calculation Formula
The Scribner log volume calculation formula is based on cutting 1-inch thick boards from the small end of the log. The specific method involves drawing several board strips, each 1 inch thick, with a minimum width of 4 inches and 1/4 inch saw kerfs between them, on the small end cross-section of the log. The widths of all the board strips are summed to calculate the cross-sectional area in square inches, which is then divided by 12 to obtain the volume of 1 foot of log in board feet (1 board foot = 1 inch thick × 1 foot wide × 1 foot long).
