Orphan Jane Eyre is sent to Lowood School by her aunt, where she suffers greatly. As an adult, she applies for a position as a governess at Thornfield Manor. The master of the manor, Rochester, is a melancholic and enigmatic man. Jane is moved by his deep affection and gives her heart to him, yet an eerie atmosphere still lingers in the manor. Just moments before her wedding, a lawyer suddenly visits and accuses Rochester of bigamy, revealing that his first wife was the madwoman Bertha. Jane hastily leaves Thornfield Manor. She returns to her aunt's house but still hears Rochester's calls from time to time. When she returns to Thornfield Manor, it has been destroyed by the madwoman, leaving only ruins and a blind Rochester.
