Features: Steel production has two processes: the long process and the short process. The long process refers to the blast furnace/basic oxygen furnace process, while the short process is the electric furnace process (also known as "compact process" or "regenerative process"). In recent years, China's total steel output has exceeded 100 million tons annually, and steel production development has entered the stage of "controlling total output, adjusting structure, and improving efficiency." Under these circumstances, it can be predicted that in the coming years, the proportion of the short process in China's steel production will gradually increase. This is not only necessary for resource conservation and environmental protection but also for the sustainable development strategy of China's steel industry. A Chinese metallurgical expert once said, "Without the development of the refractory materials industry, there would be no 120 million tons of steel today; without the development of the refractory materials industry, there would be no 80% continuous casting ratio; without the development of refractories, there would be no long-lasting furnaces. Of course, factors affecting furnace longevity, apart from the quality of refractory materials themselves, include close cooperation with users. Furnace construction, maintenance, and smelting process operations are all important factors affecting furnace longevity. Therefore, it is highly meaningful for refractory material workers to understand users' needs and the usage environment of refractory materials, and for metallurgical workers to understand the performance and proper usage methods of refractory materials. The purpose of compiling this book is precisely this.
