Features: This specification was revised according to the requirements of the Ministry of Communications of the People's Republic of China, Document No. 739 of Jiaotong Highway, dated [1999], titled "Notice on Issuing the Work Plan for the Compilation and Revision of Highway Construction Standards, Norms, and Quotas in 1999." The revision was based on the spirit of the minutes of the review meeting for the outline of this specification, and the name of the specification was changed to "Highway Masonry and Concrete Bridge and Culvert Design Specification." During the revision process, the specification revision team absorbed research achievements and practical engineering design experience from relevant domestic units, drew on advanced international standards and specifications, and conducted comparisons and coordination with relevant domestic specifications. After the preliminary draft of the specification was completed, opinions were widely solicited from relevant units and individuals through various means, and trial calculations and comparisons were made on the main content of the specification. After repeated discussions, revisions, and enrichments, it was finally reviewed and finalized by the Ministry of Communications in conjunction with relevant departments. The revised specification consists of 7 chapters and 2 appendices. The main revisions include:
1. According to the "Unified Standard for Reliability Design of Highway Engineering Structures" (GB/T 50283-1999), a limit state design method based on probability theory was adopted.
2. According to the "Basic Terms and General Symbols for Engineering Structure Design" (GBJ 132-90), symbols were revised, and basic terminology was listed.
3. Content related to reinforced earth bridge abutments was added.
4. Regarding materials, brick materials were removed, and new stone, concrete, and mortar strength grades that comply with national standards were adopted. According to the limit state design method, design values for the strength of various materials were formulated.
5. The minimum strength grade requirements for materials were moderately improved, and durability requirements were proposed.
6. The eccentric compression calculation for masonry in the original specification was appropriately revised and improved.
Relevant units are requested to summarize experience, accumulate data, and report issues and suggestions to the Communications Construction Planning and Design Institute of China (No. 33, Qianchaoquan Hutong, Dongsi, Beijing, Zip Code 100010) in time for reference in future revisions.
