Can children drink sugar water?

Patient's question:

Hello doctor, brown sugar and white sugar are high in sugar content. Is it okay to add regular sugar when making sugar water for babies?

Doctor's answer:

Brown sugar refers to sugarcane products with honey, formed by squeezing and concentrating sugarcane juice into a honeyed sugar. Brown sugar is classified into different types based on crystal particles, such as dark brown sugar, brown sugar powder, and bowl sugar. Due to not undergoing high refinement, it retains almost all the components of sugarcane juice. In addition to its sugar function, it also contains vitamins and trace elements like iron, zinc, manganese, and chromium, making its nutritional content much higher than white sugar. Drinking a moderate amount of brown sugar water daily can be beneficial for children's health, helping to regulate the spleen and stomach and replenish trace elements. However, it is still recommended not to consume too much, as excessive intake can easily lead to weight gain, dental damage, such as cavities, and other issues.
