Since ancient times, the period from 480 BC to 323 BC has been regarded as one of the most important periods in Greek history—the classical period of Greek culture. During this time, the values and customs of ancient Greek society were clearly reflected in the visual art created by the Greeks. In this new edition of "Greek Overview," the author provides new interpretations of the role of Greek art in politics, society, and religion: some chapters focus on the relationship between visual narratives and historical facts, the role of artistic styles in constructing meaning, and how individual social identity is reflected in the images of decorated pottery and jewelry, as well as in naturalistic-style murals and public buildings across all Hellenistic cities. By depicting the Parthenon, a typical monumental building of ancient Greece, the author Mark Fuller explores principles of classical sculpture, architecture, and painting to further examine the entire developmental stage of Greek art from its birth around 900 BC to its fusion with Roman art. Combining recent archaeological discoveries with new research methods, Fuller also presents a history of Greek art and the intellectual history of classical art through various media and historical materials. These include statues unearthed from the Aegean islands of Italy, gold and ivory carvings from Macedon, to the great Hellenistic monuments in the eastern Greek world. Professor Mark D. Fuller is the Chair and Head of the Department of Art History at Ohio State University. His main research areas include sculpture from ancient Greece, Rome, and the Hellenistic period, and he has published specialized works on Roman art.
