Can you drink alcohol after ventricular septal defect surgery?

Patient's question:

Hello doctor, I had surgical repair for a ventricular septal defect. Can I drink alcohol after the ventricular septal defect surgery?

Doctor's answer:

Room defect surgical repair requires being performed under extracorporeal circulation, and the surgical outcome is certain. If the child is in good preoperative condition, recovery is rapid. Typically, the child can return from the postoperative recovery room (ICU) to the general ward the day after surgery and be discharged within 7 days, taking some oral medications home to follow for about a month. In most cases, after surgery, the child's heart murmur disappears, and the heart structure and function return to normal. Some severe cases with poor preoperative condition, such as those with severe pulmonary artery hypertension, recurrent respiratory infections, or very young age and low weight, may have a longer recovery period. However, once fully recovered, these children show significant improvement. Post surgery generally has no long-term sequelae. It is not advisable to consume alcohol.
