This book was originally titled Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English (abbreviated as OALD). Since its first publication, the English version has undergone three revisions. For over 40 years in the second half of the 20th century, it has been widely popular worldwide and highly acclaimed by readers. In 1988, with permission from Oxford University Press, our institution published and distributed the Simplified Chinese edition of The Oxford Modern Advanced Learner's Dictionary (Simplified Chinese version), whose English text is the third edition of this dictionary. In 1989, Oxford University Press released the fourth edition in an English format, edited by the renowned linguist A. P. Cowie, which comprehensively revised the third edition, increasing its content by more than 50% compared to the third edition. Updates were made in various aspects such as word selection, pronunciation, definitions, examples, usage explanations, sentence patterns, and idioms, making the content richer, more practical, and more aligned with the needs of English learners in non-English-speaking countries. It is truly a leading English dictionary of its time. In 1994, the English-Chinese bilingual edition was published, with the title changed to The Oxford Advanced Learner's Chinese-English Dictionary. With permission from Oxford University Press, our institution is authorized to publish and distribute the Simplified Chinese edition of this bilingual version, which is the book you are holding now.
Before publication, with the consent of Oxford University Press, we made some technical edits to the original text to better suit the preferences of readers in China. If there are any shortcomings, we sincerely ask the readers to point them out.
