Features: MacKintosh's architectural design career reminds us that the happiness architecture brings us can only be found in its formation process and in the things we can specifically grasp. Each project of MacKintosh introduced in this book fully demonstrates his emphasis on and preference for detailed treatment. In the Andrewes Bews Villa and Studio project, the intersection of beams and columns is an example of treating structural issues as sculpture. In the Bronstein Cohen Library design, the carefully considered proportions, scale, and spaces with rich detailed treatment evoke the villa/studio of Frank Lloyd Wright himself in Oak Park, Illinois. The exterior of the Tasker Villa shows that relatively simple, local materials can also achieve a certain degree of scale and expressive power. In the Kim's Villa project, the staircase is a masterful work of detailed design, clearly illustrating the relationship between floors. The Withers House cleverly uses ordinary materials, such as asphalt shingles and corrugated steel sheets, to transform this cabin into a miniature art museum.
