"Knowledge of Ancient Chinese" is one of the books in the Chinese Knowledge Series. Ancient Chinese written language has two systems: Classical Chinese and Old Vernacular. The scope of Ancient Chinese research includes three parts: characters, phonology, and etymology (grammar, vocabulary, and rhetoric were included in etymology in ancient times, but books published after the founding of the People's Republic of China have separated these three parts). Characters, phonology, and etymology are both self-contained systems and interconnected. This is partly because Old Vernacular differs less from Modern Chinese, and partly because most of our ancient classics were written in Classical Chinese, so the research object of Ancient Chinese is Classical Chinese, generally not involving Old Vernacular.
