Features: The difference between city and countryside lies in architecture, and architecture is a symbol of the city. "Architecture is written in stone," it is a product of social, political, economic, cultural, and technological developments. Modern architecture once created the glorious past of Shanghai. After half a century or even a century of wind and rain, most buildings have aged and become dilapidated, but the outstanding modern buildings have become more brilliant over time, appearing exceptionally precious. Old Shanghai, old architecture, old charm – this place holds the glorious achievements of countless heroes and heroines, as well as the notorious deeds left by all walks of life. Each building has a story, and many historical anecdotes and tales of famous figures in Shanghai have originated here. When modern people stand before the preserved old buildings, the elderly feel a sense of familiarity, stirring memories of the past, while the young feel both unfamiliar and curious, attracting them to learn more about them. This book includes: hotel architecture; bank architecture; insurance company architecture; exchange building architecture; department store architecture; foreign trading house architecture; newspaper building architecture, and more. This book is part of the "Old Shanghai Architecture" series. The buildings listed in this book are essentially the highlights from three batches of outstanding modern protected buildings formulated successively by relevant departments of the Shanghai Municipal Government. The authors believe that these buildings are relatively well-known, but they do not exclude the possibility that some buildings not included in this book are classics. Some classic buildings, such as the Grand World, the French Concession, and the Shanghai Race Course, have already been included in another volume of the "Old Shanghai Architecture" series titled "Disappeared Old Shanghai Architecture," so they are not repeated here.
