Li Yunbo, originally from Guangdong, comes from a scholarly family. His father, Li Yanshan, was a renowned Lingnan painter, calligrapher, and poet in the 1930s and 1940s, hailed as the "Master of Landscape Painting." Under his father's influence, Li Yunbo developed a solid foundation in traditional Chinese art and culture from a young age. In 1953, Li Yunbo graduated from the Department of Architectural Engineering at Sun Yat-sen University. He later worked in architectural design, urban planning, and interior design in cities such as Shenyang, Beijing, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore, and Guangzhou.
For many years, Li Yunbo devoted himself to researching the traditions of Chinese architectural design. He conducted extensive field studies of both Eastern and Western architecture, examining classic buildings from around the world. Drawing on Western architectural theories and methods, he inherited the style of classical Chinese treatises and used modern architectural science to comprehensively explain and analyze traditional Chinese architecture. His work validated the existence of architectural and planning theories with distinct Chinese characteristics since ancient times, many of which were uniquely Chinese or pioneered globally, holding leading positions worldwide. Furthermore, he firmly affirmed that the design principles of classical Chinese architecture are the crystallization of China's long history and culture and are also treasures in the global treasury of architectural and cultural arts.
The Art of Chinese Architecture summarizes the principles of classical Chinese architectural design and distinctly proposes its own insights into Chinese classical architectural culture. It refutes the arrogant and narrow academic views of some Westerners and criticizes certain Chinese "scholars" for their Westernized tendencies lacking in national confidence. The book subtly reveals the author's deep love for his homeland and pride in the outstanding national culture.
