A canopy is a device that provides shelter from rain, snow, and sunlight, and serves as a means to guide the flow of people and vehicles, as well as direct sightlines. Canopies play a certain role in enriching the architectural facade and enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the built environment. In recent years, new buildings have sprung up like bamboo shoots after rain, diverse in color and form. As entrances to buildings, especially those of large public structures, canopies are frequently used by people and vehicles, requiring them to be striking and prominent. The traditional forms and scales of canopy entrances no longer meet the demands of modern architecture, the activities, interactions, and aesthetic preferences of contemporary people. Heavy, dull, and monotonous canopies have been replaced by spacious, bright, lightweight, and elegant modern designs. The novelty of materials, the diversity of structures, and the renewal of creative concepts and techniques have made modern canopies varied in form and distinctive in style. Architecture is a chronicle of the times, and as a component of architecture—the canopy at the entrance—it also records the progress of the era. As a record, we have compiled and organized photographs of canopies that we have taken and collected into this book, for the appreciation and reference of readers and peers.
