Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov (1814–1841) was a great Russian poet of the 19th century. Born into a family of retired officers, he studied at Moscow University and served in the Dragoon Regiment. He began writing poetry at the age of 14 and gained fame in 1837 with his poem "The Death of the Poet," written in response to Pushkin's murder in a duel. Due to his opposition to autocratic rule, he was repeatedly imprisoned and exiled. He died in a duel at the age of 27.
