Features: Mao Zedong and Chiang Kai-shek are undoubtedly two figures who have had the most profound impact on modern Chinese history. They fought on the battlefield for over two decades, most of the time as adversaries. This is perhaps a rare pair of rivals in the history of world wars. Chiang Kai-shek rose to the position of Generalissimo of the Kuomintang through campaigns like the Eastern Expedition and the Northern Expedition. He defeated almost all of his adversaries in battle, but he could not overcome Mao Zedong. Mao Zedong defeated Chiang Kai-shek, while also deeply embedding Chiang into his own history. This book takes war as its main thread, starting from a comparative perspective, focusing on describing and analyzing the intelligence, courage, and personality traits demonstrated by Mao Zedong and Chiang Kai-shek in their war decision-making and military guidance, and revealing the profound reasons behind their successes and failures. The question we aim to answer is: How did Mao Zedong and Chiang Kai-shek begin their military careers, and what qualities and conditions did they possess beforehand? What strategies and tactics did Mao Zedong employ to achieve victories with fewer resources against stronger opponents? What were the significant gains and losses in Chiang Kai-shek's military guidance? What were the different characteristics in their military leadership and command? How did they use both political and military means in their struggles? What political and military factors determined their successes and failures? History is the biography of giants, as giants often represent the masses and the cause, and war often allows giants to showcase their towering stature. The Chinese Revolution and War of Liberation shaped Mao Zedong's brilliant and majestic image, but it also cannot do without the shadow of Chiang Kai-shek as his wartime rival. Describing war by focusing on only one side is like watching a fight through a doorframe—seeing only one person swinging fists and kicking feet, leaving one puzzled. Only by opening the door and watching both sides exchange blows can one appreciate the techniques and assess the strengths of the opponents. Therefore, only by studying modern Chinese war by comparing Mao Zedong and Chiang Kai-shek can we more fully, accurately, and vividly reflect the face of war and the of the giants. This book seeks to vividly describe the process of war, highlighting the upper-level decisions and strategic issues during the war, and showcasing the thinking of the war commanders Mao Zedong and Chiang Kai-shek regarding military matters and their ability to steer the entire war. We will examine and compare Mao Zedong and Chiang Kai-shek from this higher and more updated perspective, and through them, gain a deeper understanding of the objective process of modern Chinese history.
