Features: Newly Compiled College German is designed based on the Teaching Syllabus for College German (Second Edition). This textbook is aimed at undergraduate students in science, engineering, liberal arts, and management majors who are beginners in learning German, and can also serve as a basic textbook for German language training. With the higher requirements for university foreign language teaching in the new century, this textbook, based on the provisions and quantitative indicators of the new syllabus, further emphasizes the cultivation of students' practical language application skills, especially communicative competence. Newly Compiled College German consists of four volumes, each with a student book and a teacher book. Main texts, listening comprehension, and unit vocabulary are accompanied by audio cassettes. Each volume contains ten units, each centered around a theme to provide training in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation, aiming to develop students' comprehensive language skills. Since the development of language skills is inseparable and mutually reinforcing, the integrated application of language skills is also required in real language environments. In comparison, Volume 1 and Volume 2 focus more on listening and speaking training and oral communicative activities, while also covering basic grammar. Volumes 3 and 4 continue to strengthen listening and speaking training while gradually increasing reading volume to further improve reading, writing, and written communicative skills. Except for the phonetics section in Volume 1, each unit in this textbook consists of eight parts: introduction, main text, exercises, communicative intent, listening, reading, grammar summary, and unit vocabulary list. Volume 1 units are dedicated to phonetics, requiring approximately 12 hours to complete. The basic course has 9 units, each requiring about 6 hours. The remaining time is available for review and exams. Adjustments can also be made based on specific teaching conditions. For the convenience of teaching, the main features of Volume 1 are described as follows:
1. Under the principle of selecting themes relevant to students' campus and social lives, Volume 1 chooses the best language samples. The texts are fresh, diverse in topics and genres, practical, and rich in contemporary.
2. Dialogue form is a feature of the texts and exercises. To help students break free from rote memorization and improve language application skills in a relaxed and enjoyable way, various communicative exercises are designed, which are context-based, easy to practice, and short in length, allowing students to naturally absorb and apply the learned language knowledge through repeated practice in specific contexts. Learn through communication, and communicate through learning, thereby improving learning efficiency.
3. Each unit focuses on training one communicative intent, aiming to help students master common expressions in certain communicative contexts.
4. Grammar is naturally integrated into each theme and serves each theme. Grammar exercises emphasize fun, practicality, and diversity. Grammar introductions are tabular, concise, and easy to find, providing guidance for students' self-study.
5. The illustrations and photographs in each unit are designed with teaching purposes in mind, facilitating the conduct of exercises.
6. Cross-cultural communication and national studies inject vitality and energy into the learning of each unit. Through German learning, students gain a deeper understanding of foreign cultures, which helps to cultivate their cross-cultural communication skills.
7. To meet the needs of the information age, each unit provides the possibility of online learning. Practice opportunities such as web pages and clicking URLs allow students to expand the scope of language application, broaden their learning perspectives, and closely integrate traditional language teaching with modern multimedia teaching methods.
