Features: The research on regional economics in our country started late, and the theoretical foundation is still underdeveloped. There are also some disagreements in the research objects. Therefore, strengthening the research on basic theoretical issues of regional economics remains a very important task. Based on an examination of different views on the research objects of regional economics both domestically and internationally, this paper points out that regional economics should, under the premise of achieving national economic goals, be based on the theories of regional division of labor and locational advantages, aim at the spatial equilibrium of economic activities, start from the spatial analysis of the economy, take economic regions with similar economic characteristics as units, and study the spatial allocation of basic elements such as population, natural resources, capital, labor, institutions, systems, and policies within the region, as well as the spatial structure and spatial process of economic activities.
