Foreword
We live in an amazing era. Although I’ve never been to these places, I can tell you what Mount Everest, the Black Forest, the Gobi Desert in China, the Demerara Marshes, and even the Moon look like. I can also describe their features; I can even describe the texture of these places. That’s because I’ve seen their beautiful landscape photos—those that show their actual appearance and scenic characteristics. Every place—the mountains, forests, deserts, and plains—has its own features and atmosphere, its own personality. The job of a landscape photographer is to inject that feeling into the visual elements and then find ways to capture and express that feeling. Seeing and thinking are the most important tools. Because in any kind of photography, understanding your subject and deciding what to describe are the keys to success. Then, you must experiment, trying different lenses and angles, various advantageous shooting points, and often returning to find the light that enhances the atmosphere. Successful photos allow the viewer to have the same feeling as the photographer, with their gaze and thoughts entering the scene. Good landscape photos give us a sense of place. Besides family, landscapes may be what we love the most. But they are also the most difficult to capture. A small roll of film is hard to fill with magnificent landscapes. In this book, you will explore factors such as ideas, composition, light, and equipment, which are necessary for taking beautiful landscape photos. You will also explore the subjects, timing, and methods of photography. Additionally, you will receive some philosophical and practical tips from three National Geographic photographers. Their photos show us the stunning landscapes around the world, encouraging us to take many photos. Photography, like playing the piano, golf, or other skills, the more you think about it and do it, the greater your achievements. This book will become a springboard for you to explore the world around you through photography.
