What should be done about thalassemia?

Patient's question:

Thalassemia needs to be addressed. As a parent, I am very worried and afraid that my child's condition will worsen. Regarding the issue I just mentioned, I hope the doctor can answer.

Doctor's answer:

Thalassemia is a genetic disease, primarily distributed in Mediterranean countries and Asian regions. Guangxi, Guangdong, and Hainan in China are high-prevalence areas for thalassemia. There are mainly two types of thalassemia: α-thalassemia and β-thalassemia, which can be further divided into four grades: extremely mild, mild, intermediate, and severe. If one or more abnormal genes are inherited from parents, thalassemia can be developed. Thalassemia is always inherited from parents; it is not contagious.
