From a Common Bandit to the Grand Marshal of the Beiyang Government – A Legendary Life.
On May 17, 1928, Zhang Zuolin, facing the threats and intimidation of the Japanese Minister Arisawa, flew into a rage, his voice fierce: “This matter (referring to Zhang Zongchang killing Japanese nationals) has no report, no investigation, and you want me to take responsibility? Damn it! How can this be justified! I don’t give a damn about this rotten body, but I won’t do something that would make our generations feel ashamed!”
On May 25, Zhang Zuolin replied to the Japanese note: “When the impact of war and the regions of Beijing and Tianjin affect Manchuria, Japan will take emergency measures – this clause, the Chinese government cannot accept. The three provinces of Northeast China and the regions of Beijing and Tianjin are all Chinese territory, and their sovereignty cannot be ignored.”
On the morning of June 3, Zhang Zuolin and his entourage boarded the train at the Qianmen Railway Station in Beijing to return to Fengtian.
On the morning of June 4, the special train arrived at the Huanggutun Station. As they approached the Three-Hole Bridge, a loud explosion occurred, and the carriage where Zhang Zuolin was seated was shattered.
“Books I Have Not Read, Secrets I Can Share with Anyone”
“Sleeping on the Beauty’s Arm, Waking to Rule the World” – These were Zhang Zuolin’s maxims in the underworld.
This illiterate bandit-turned-militarist possessed extraordinary political wisdom. From a homeless child from the impoverished hinterlands of western Liaoning, he rose to become the leader of a local bandit, then voluntarily accepted amnesty to become a battalion commander in the Qing Dynasty’s frontier guard, and later transformed into the Military Governor of Fengtian in the Republic of China. He grew bolder and bolder, ultimately becoming the Grand Marshal of the National Security Government anddug into Zhongnanhai.
With these credentials, Zhang Zuolin stood out in the early 20th-century Chinese political scene, becoming a unique and unparalleled phenomenon.
Although this is a novel, it is considered a reliable historical account, depicting Zhang Zuolin’s highly legendary life anding his cunning and bravery, vulgarity and magnanimity, insatiable greed, and wisdom in disguise.
