The merchant rents the small attic on the top floor to a poor student. A little ghost also lives in the shop, and the merchant couple gives him porridge every day. One night, the poor student comes to the shop to buy candles and cheese. The merchant tears out a piece of paper from an old book and wraps the items for him. The poor student takes the wrapped paper, staring at the words on it again and again. The merchant finds it quite amusing and says, "There are plenty of such books!" The merchant takes out a book and says, "If you give me three copper coins, this book is yours!" The merchant looks at the poor student, feeling very strange—could poetry be better than cheese?
