Publish Date: 2006-09-13
Features: The author, a film critic, producer, and documentary director, visited China in July 2006 to participate in the Shanghai Film Festival and received widespread attention from domestic media. He will also hold a grand Chinese Film Festival in Edinburgh next February. Compared to the rigid, outline-style film history commonly found domestically, this book is refreshingly lively, with theoretical analysis that is neither difficult nor obscure, and examples that are both profound and accessible. It is a highly readable film book that will not deter readers. The 400 illustrations are particularly captivating. You won’t find a second film book like this in the world. Another distinctive feature of the book is the author’s use of personal experience to discuss the achievements of the film industry and the development of film media over the past century. For the general audience of DVD enthusiasts, this book is undoubtedly the best film read that combines knowledge and leisure. Moreover, statistics show that nearly 300 universities in China have set up film-related majors, and the libraries of these institutions as well as the students in these fields will be the most stable readers of the book. Experienced film fans know that no shot, style, or form is born out of thin air or absolutely original; their origins can always be traced in the upper reaches of film history. What makes The Story of Film so captivating is that it tells the stories of the formation and evolution of film language, such as the story of "montage," the story of "jump cuts," and the story of "over-the-shoulder shots."
