Features: We have had glory. In those exciting decades at the turn of the century, a group of scholars dedicated to establishing modern Chinese humanities and social sciences rose in chaos, shouted in the dark, farmed in ink, and taught in humble settings, setting a glorious example for us. Although their thoughts were limited by the times, their pursuit of knowledge was resolute, their academic rigor was strict, their knowledge was profound, and their spirit of integrating Eastern and Western learning should be admired and emulated by later generations. The authors often wonder, in a few decades, when later generations recall our generation and ask what we did and what we left them, will we pass on the thoughts and demeanor of our academic predecessors to our students? This is the precious legacy left to us by the scholars of humanities and social sciences, and it is also the heavy burden we must face and cannot refuse. Therefore, based on the publication of academic figures in the journal Social Sciences Frontline, we compiled the book Acquiring Knowledge and Pursuing the Way—The Academic Path of Chinese Scholars. In addition to the older masters and giants, we also selected some active middle-aged and young scholars in recent years to allow readers to understand the academic trends of contemporary middle-aged and young scholars. Based on the introduction of a single journal, the selected figures are very limited, merely a tiny fraction of the numerous scholars of Chinese humanities and social sciences. Fortunately, one can see a leopard in a tube, and the book only gathers one side of the thoughts and demeanor of academic figures in Chinese humanities and social sciences in the 20th century. We believe readers can understand our limited selection.
