● Buddhism is the philosophy of philosophy, Buddhist culture is splendid and glorious. The influence of Buddhism on various fields in China, such as politics, economy, thought, culture, art, and even social life, is extensive and profound. Without understanding Chinese Buddhism, it is impossible to truly comprehend the past and present of China, let alone grasp its future well. As one of the three world-renowned religions, Buddhism, introduced to China during the Han Dynasty, rapidly penetrated into all aspects of Chinese social life and, together with Confucianism and Taoism, became one of the mainstreams of traditional Chinese culture. Over the long course of history, it has given rise to many distinctive Buddhist schools (such as Tibetan Buddhism, Northern Buddhism, and Southern Buddhism, with their major sects) and created splendid Buddhist culture. Whether it is the rise and fall of dynasties or the changes in society, it is difficult to erase the extensive and profound influence of Buddhism in China's politics, economy, thought, culture, art, and even social life. It can be said that without understanding Chinese Buddhism, it is impossible to truly grasp the past and present of China, let alone its future. However, to our regret, although Chinese Buddhist classics and literature have been abundant and vast throughout history, it has been difficult to find an encyclopedic Buddhist work suitable for a broad audience of cadres, professional workers, Buddhist researchers, and the general Buddhist faithful. Existing Buddhist books are either too profound for ordinary readers to comprehend or merely reference materials for Buddhist professionals, or they only cover individual aspects of Buddhism without being comprehensive or systematic. The publication of this book fills this gap in China.
