Fission in the Western Hemisphere: A Comparative Study of Modern Latin America and U.S. Development Models

Author: Liu Wenlong, Zhu Hongbo (editors)

Publishing Date: 2005-12-01
Features: The history of the Western Hemisphere, despite its temporal and spatial consistency, has shown significant differences between Latin America and Anglo-America since the colonial era. As Mexican scholars have pointed out: "From its origins, when the logic of North American colonization persisted in individual interests (whether the profits of the colonies or the pursuit of religious freedom), in Latin America, it was the centralized conquest represented by the Spanish and Portuguese royal courts, and dominated by a strict bureaucratic hierarchy." This book attempts to use empirical methods to compare and study the historical processes of Latin America and the United States, demonstrating the different economic development processes and their main characteristics in the colonial period, the independence revolution period, and the 19th century in the Americas, thereby revealing that the division of the Western Hemisphere is an inevitable result of centuries of divergent historical development processes in Latin America and the United States. This book is part of the Shanghai Social Sciences "Nineteen-Ninety-Five Plan" and also the result of our many years of research. Although its length is not long, we have indeed spent a lot of effort to overcome the difficulties of insufficient materials and ultimately completed this task.
