Author: (American) Morse, translated by Zhang Huwen et al.
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 2006-07-01
Features: Morse's The History of Foreign Relations of China, a three-volume work, with the first volume published in 1910 and the remaining two in 1918. Morse (1855-1933) was an American, a graduate of Harvard University. After coming to China, he served in the Chinese Customs under the control of British official Robert Hart for a long time. As Hart's trusted aide, he participated in many confidential tasks and possessed a vast amount of first-hand materials. Therefore, the book he wrote has become a primary reference source for the study of modern Chinese history, particularly the history of foreign relations. As the renowned American scholar John K. Fairbank said, many new studies have merely made partial additions to Morse's work. Of course, as mentioned above, while the author also attempted to give an impression of impartiality, his stance was extremely clear, serving as a mouthpiece for colonialists.
