Publisher:
Publishing Date: 2006-05-01
Features: Huang Kan believed that the Guangyun is a key text in the study of ancient Chinese and can be used to trace the evolution of sounds from ancient to modern times. Therefore, Huang Kan meticulously collated and annotated the Guangyun, leaving behind hundreds of thousands of words in his annotations. Later, his nephew Huang Zhuo transcribed these annotations into a book. Today, Huang Yanzu, the philosophical successor of Huang Kan, has further revised the book, adding and correcting several errors and omissions in the original text. This book is an indispensable reference for scholars of Chinese characters and phonology.
Huang Kan (1886–1935), originally named Qiao Xin, later changed his name to Kan, styled Ligang, and later self-styled as "Zongshou Jushi" (Retainer of the Standard Measure). He was from Xichun, Hubei. In his youth, Huang Kan actively participated in the revolution to overthrow the feudal rule of the Qing Dynasty. After the establishment of the Republic of China, he saw warlords seizing power and facing both internal and external threats, leading him to withdraw from politics. From 1914 onwards, he successively taught at Peking University, Wuchang Normal School, China University, Shanxi University, Beijing Normal University, Northeastern University, Jinling University, and Central University. He passed away in 1935.
