Boxer Protocol in the Late Qing Dynasty 6th Volume

Author: First Historical Archives of China, Department of History, Fujian Normal University

Publishing Time: Not available
Features: This issue selects documents related to the late Qing Dynasty's educational disputes from the "British Parliamentary Papers," starting from the Yangzhou Prefecture educational dispute in 1868 and ending with the anti-foreign riots in 1892. For documents with available Chinese originals for reference, the principle is to omit translation; for those that cannot be cross-referenced with Chinese originals or for some Chinese originals that are difficult to find, translations are provided based on the English versions. In cases where the content of the Chinese and English versions is inconsistent or where ambiguities arise due to misinterpretations by the original translators, both the Chinese version and the differences are noted. Some document titles are added by the compilers based on the content. For names of individuals selected for the documents, Han names or established translated names are generally used, and an "English-Chinese Comparison Table of Major Figures and Organizations" is included as "Appendix I." Ship names are translated either phonetically or descriptively, and an "English-Chinese Comparison Table of Ship Names" is included as "Appendix II." For other Chinese personal and place names that are uncertain, phonetic translations are used, and the English names are appended upon their first occurrence. Annotations, except where specified, are added by the compilers. Part of this volume was translated by Shen Gengmei, while the second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth parts were translated by Yu Guanxing. The seventh part was translated by both Yu Guanxing and Zeng Guangchao. The entire book was proofread by Professor Lin Jitao of the Department of Foreign Languages, Fujian Normal University, and edited by Professor Lin Jinshui of the Department of History, Fujian Normal University, who was responsible for unifying the format, translations, and back-translating some Chinese originals, as well as verifying errors in the original texts. All foreign-language materials included in this book were selected by the chief editor, Professor Chen Zenghui, from archival documents in the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. Professor Chen Zenghui passed away on February 25, 1994. The deputy editor, Professor Xu Gongsheng, was Professor Chen's trusted assistant and actively assisted in collecting materials, contacting translators and proofreaders, and contributed significantly to the publication of the book. He was also responsible for compiling the bibliography and the chronology of educational disputes.
