Features: In the mid-Qing Dynasty, the impoverished scholar Tao Shu was to marry the daughter of the Sun family, Qiao Yun. However, a local wealthy merchant intervened and snatched her away. The Sun family, greedy for wealth and status, readily agreed to the arrangement. Forced to break off the engagement, Tao Shu married someone else. Later, Tao Shu passed the imperial examination and rose to prominence in his career, while the wealthy family from his time gradually declined. The daughter of the Sun family also fell into a life of hardship, surviving amidst dim lanterns and yellow scrolls.
