Lijiang Ancient Town is located in the ancient city area of Lijiang City, southwestern Yunnan Province, China, also known as Dayan Town. It is the only ancient city in China’s cultural heritage without walls. The three mountain ranges of Laoyunshan, Yulongshan, and the endless mountains (commonly referred to as Xiaoliangshan) in Yunling Snow Mountain form the basic framework and backbone of the terrain in the Lijiang region. In the ancient city area of Lijiang, 354 bridges have been built over the Yuhe River system, with the Great Stone Bridge being the most distinctive. The Mu Palace in the ancient city was originally the office of the hereditary tusi (local ruler) Mu family, reflecting the rise and fall of the Mu family’s history. Eight kilometers north of the ancient city lies the Bai Sha residential architecture group, which was once the political, economic, and cultural center of the Lijiang region during the Song and Yuan dynasties (10th–14th centuries). In Lijiang Ancient Town, you can ascend to enjoy the scenery, overlook the city’s layout from above, and admire the water views along the rivers. Walking through the streets and courtyards allows you to appreciate the architecture of the ancient city.
In 1986, Lijiang Ancient Town was listed by the Chinese government as a national historical and cultural city, and in 1997, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In reports by authoritative international tourism institutions, Lijiang has been ranked as one of China’s "10 most desirable cities."
