Features: "Modern Japanese Novels Collection" was published in June 1923 by the Shanghai Commercial Press, compiled by Zhou Zuoren, with eleven works translated by Lu Xun and nineteen by Zhou Zuoren. The purpose of "Modern Japanese Novels Collection" was to introduce modern Japanese fiction, so among the fifteen authors in this collection, only Kunita and Natsume are deceased; the rest are still living. As for selecting these fifteen authors and thirty works from the broader literary scene, I must admit that it was largely based on personal taste. However, while we believe pure objective criticism is impossible, we are also unwilling to impose narrow subjective judgments. My method is to select works by authors who have already received critical acclaim and are within my own capacity to understand and appreciate, and include them in the collection. Therefore, the scope of our selection may be somewhat limited. But within this limited scope, both the authors and their works hold enduring value.
