Features: Bertrand Russell (1872-1970), a giant philosopher of the 20th century. Born on May 18, 1872, in Trelleborg, England. In 1890, he entered Trinity College, Cambridge, and won a mathematics scholarship. In 1893 (third year), he switched to philosophy, graduating from Cambridge in 1894 with a philosophy degree. During World War II, he settled in the United States. In June 1950, he received the "Order of Merit" from King George VI of the United Kingdom. In December 1950, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature. In 1960, he received the Sonning Prize from Denmark. In 1964, he established the "Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation." On February 2, 1970, he passed away at the age of 98, having lived through nearly an entire century. Bertrand Russell's life spanned almost a full century. He experienced the gentle twilight of the Victorian era, endured the bitterness of confinement behind bars and the pain of lost freedom, and also fought tirelessly for human freedom and happiness, truly weathered by life. As a philosopher, thinker, and social activist, he made significant contributions to both academia and society in a turbulent and perilous century, leaving a trail of shining footprints in human history. Unlike the reclusive scholars who detached themselves from worldly affairs, Russell was a humanist and pacifist with a strong sense of social concern. He devoted his entire life to political activities and social causes, writing extensively on politics and society. His heart was filled with justice, conscience, wisdom, and warmth. Combining the identities of a scholar and a social activist, he pursued truth and justice as his lifelong mission. As a philosopher, his thought evolved through stages such as absolute idealism, logical atomism, neorealism, and neutral monism. His major contributions were in the field of mathematical logic. From logical atomism and neorealism, he became one of the founders of modern analytic philosophy. In his pursuit of truth, Russell was open-minded, (good at learning from all sides), (good at self-examination), and continuously refined his views. His philosophy was a philosophy of life, focusing on life, facing reality, caring about reality, and turning toward society. His rich life background ensured that his philosophy was neither confined to the study nor reduced to mere playfulness, but deeply grounded in reality, with a touch of gentlemanly grace. Throughout his life, Russell wrote more than seventy or eighty books and thousands of essays, covering a wide range of topics such as philosophy, mathematics, science, ethics, sociology, politics, education, history, and religion, earning him the title of an "encyclopedic thinker." Most of his works combined the depth of theory with the accessibility of expression, blending the dialectical nature of Aristotle and Hegel with the literary flair of Voltaire and Leonardo da Vinci. His clear and fresh prose was highly regarded in American literature. Throughout his life, his character and career were best summarized by his statement, "Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: love of truth, love of justice, and love of the ideal of humanity." He also said, "Love and knowledge lead me toward heaven, but compassion always brings me back to earth." Just as engaging with Russell requires wisdom, we need various forms of wisdom in the era of globalization, and in the vast ocean of wisdom, Russell stands as a bright beacon with keen insight into "reality." Whether it is his life wisdom, philosophical wisdom, or political wisdom, it offers great inspiration to us. If we listen to his "high-sounding discourse" both inside and outside the walls of Trinity College, gaze upon the elderly man with a deep gaze, silver-white hair, and a cigarette in his mouth, or observe the "hot potato," we will realize that he truly deserves the title of a compassionate "intellectual who led the century with unparalleled brilliance."
