This laid an extremely solid academic foundation for his scholarly pursuits. In 1929, Mr. Tong Shuyi engaged in the study of "Discerning Ancient History." In his self-composed chronology, he mentioned being deeply influenced by it, stating that when he began writing in 1933, he adopted the approach of the "Discerning Ancient History" school, with Gu Jiegang as his private master. In 1934, he met Mr. Gu Jiegang in Hangzhou and agreed to come to Beijing the following year to serve as Mr. Gu Jiegang's research assistant.
