Strauss and Nietzsche -- Western Tradition Classics and Interpretation

Author: (American) Lang Peter, translated by Tian Lina, He Zhigang, et al.
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2005-09-01
Features: This book attempts to comprehensively grasp Strauss's thought and has been praised by some of Strauss's disciples. Some even believe that Lang Peter's understanding of Strauss surpasses that of many of Strauss's disciples. The issue is not whether the interpreter is a disciple of Strauss, but how to understand Strauss. Lang Peter's approach is to understand Strauss by the way Strauss taught how to understand the great thinkers in the history of thought—as Strauss understood himself, understand Strauss. The writing style of this book is Straussian: a meticulous reading and interpretation of a short text—by understanding Strauss's understanding of Nietzsche, grasping the basic characteristics of Strauss's thought, and interpreting the main works published throughout Strauss's life. The author does not seem to fully endorse Strauss's philosophical stance, but he emphasizes that one must first understand Strauss, and to understand Strauss, one must understand him as he understands himself.
