Features: Since modern times, millions of industrial and commercial institutions from Eastern and Western countries have been established in Shanghai. This dictionary authentically reflects the conditions of these institutions at the time, based on the "Commercial Directory" published by the North China Daily News from 1880 to 1941. It includes approximately 14,000 modern industrial and commercial institutions, covering various aspects such as political parties, governments, military, economy, diplomacy, culture, education, religion, as well as foreign companies, factories, associations, churches, banks, hospitals, schools, and newspapers. Each institution is treated as a basic entry. The content includes: the English and Chinese names of the institutions, their addresses, and their existence periods. If a place name is not noted in the entry, it was omitted from the original publication; if one or more place names are noted, it indicates the presence of branches or changes in location. Some of the dates noted refer to the establishment of branches in China. The addresses in the entries generally use the headquarters address or the address listed in the annual directory, reflecting changes over the years and noting the years of change. At the end of the dictionary, there is a Chinese index of entries arranged by stroke count for easy reference. Additionally, to help readers understand the street names where these institutions were located at the time, an English-Chinese of current and past street names is provided.
