Features: Ji Xianlin (1911.8.6-) was born in Qingping, Shandong. In 1930, he enrolled in the Department of Western Literature at Tsinghua University. He graduated in 1934 and served as a Chinese teacher at Shandong Provincial Jinan High School. In the autumn of 1935, he entered the University of G?ttingen in Germany to study ancient Indian languages such as Sanskrit, Pali, and Tocharian. In 1941, he obtained a doctorate in philosophy and was hired as a faculty member at the university. In 1946, he returned to China and served as a professor in the Department of East Asian Languages at Peking University (until the present), and as the department head until 1983. From 1978, he concurrently served as the vice president of Peking University until 1984. He joined the Communist Party of China in April 1956. In 1983, he was elected as a representative and standing committee member of the Sixth National People's Congress. Currently, he serves as the vice president of the China Society of Foreign Literature and the honorary president of the China Comparative Literature Society. He has long been dedicated to the study and translation of Sanskrit literature, including the translation of the famous Indian epic "Ramayana." Additionally, he has written numerous prose works, some of which have been compiled into collections such as "Heart Shadows of India," "Lang Run Collection," and "Ji Xianlin's Prose Collection," among others.
