The entire book consists of three parts: one volume of Preface (adding 63 figures omitted in The Moon Record), twenty volumes of main text, and one volume of The Collection of Venerable Masters (《》). The twenty volumes of main text cover the lineage of Zen masters, starting from the 17th generation of the 6th patriarch down to the 35th generation in the 18th year of the Kangxi reign, spanning over 500 years. It traces the origins, meticulously verifies the lineage, and clearly clarifies the transmission of the Zen school. The book records how ancient masters attained enlightenment, their teacher-disciple relationships, and the direct pointing to the source and personal verification of reality. It serves as an important reference for understanding Zen figures and the history of Zen development. This edition was compiled based on the Continuation of the Tripitaka (《》).
