It is one of the fundamental reference books for studying ancient pre-Qin history and has become a classic work in academic history. Like the other dynastic histories by Lü Simian, this book is divided into two parts. The first half is the political history, arranged in chronological order of historical events; the second half is the social, economic, and cultural history, narrated in a categorized manner. The History of Pre-Qin China is the second book in the series of dynastic histories by Master Lü Simian, written in the mid-1930s. In December 1941, it was listed as the second specialized compilation of the National Studies Institute of Qi Lu University and published and distributed by Shanghai Kaixin Bookstore. An index of names, places, cited bibliographies, and chapter titles is appended at the end of the book. The History of Pre-Qin China is "highly regarded for its discussion of ancient historical materials, ancient historical chronology, the origins and westward migration of Chinese clans, ancient territorial boundaries, the official-student system, and self-proclaimed excellence."
