These essays are as follows: "An Overview of the World Development Trends in 2004," written by Xu Jian, Research Fellow and Deputy Director of the Institute of International and Strategic Studies, China International Institute of International Studies; "The U.S. Presidential Election and China-U.S. Relations," written by Yang Jiemian, Research Fellow and Deputy Director of the Shanghai Institute of International Studies; "China in the World Coordinates in 2004," written by Zhang Haibing, Ph.D. and Deputy Director of the World Economy Research Office, Shanghai Institute of International Studies; "North Korean Nuclear Issue and the Six-Party Talks," written by Jin Linbo, Research Fellow and Director of the Asia-Pacific Research Office, Shanghai Institute of International Studies; "The Middle East Situation Emerges New Changes Amidst Turmoil," written by Li Weijian, Research Fellow and Director of the Middle East Research Office, Shanghai Institute of International Studies; "The Realization and Impact of the 'Dual Eastward Expansion' of the EU and NATO," written by Zhang Zuqian, Research Fellow and Director of the Europe Research Office, Shanghai Institute of International Studies; "Major Changes in India's Political Situation," written by Zhao Gancheng, Research Fellow and Director of the South Asia Research Office, Shanghai Institute of International Studies; "Russia's Domestic and Foreign Affairs in a Year of Turmoil," written by Zhang Yao, Deputy Director of the Russia and Central Asia Research Office, Shanghai Institute of International Studies, and others. It is hoped that these essays will help readers understand the general outline and characteristics of the development of the international situation in 2004. According to tradition, the events covered in this annual report, except for some with direct continuity, mostly ended in 2004. The documents, statistical data, and other materials cited are also limited to those published before the end of 2004.
