Features: The jinxiang format originated in the Southern Qi Dynasty and flourished during the Song Dynasty. From the Ming and Qing dynasties onwards, new designs emerged in each generation. The term jinxiang refers to small portable boxes used in the past to store items like handkerchiefs and miscellaneous belongings. In ancient times, people studied while walking, sitting, or lying down, reading at any moment. Books had to be carried at all times, so their size was reduced to fit into these small boxes. When traveling, they were portable, and when resting, they were easy to consult. Leisurely moments were spent admiring them. Thus, although the jinxiang book is the youngest among the book collection, it upholds the Confucian principle of "learning and practicing in due time," and its later contributions were significant. Unfortunately, in modern times, with the influence of Western culture, books have adopted Western bindings. While improving and becoming more elaborate, they have also become increasingly cumbersome. Carrying them is like a burden for an ox, and reading while lying down is difficult for even a short time. Worse still, some are outwardly luxurious but inwardly hollow, prioritizing the container over the content, misleading readers and drifting further from the true essence of books. The Shangguo jinxiang book series was created with purpose, learning from the successes and shortcomings of jinxiang books throughout history. It aims to return to simplicity and elegance, promoting national culture; the design is small yet complete, preserving the essence; the price is affordable yet carefully selected for quality; the selection of titles is purposeful, with a special emphasis on personality, charm, and interest; the arrangement is logical, and purchasing them individually or collecting them together brings great satisfaction. Additionally, the paper is fragrant, the printing is vibrant, the proofreading is meticulous, and the layout is lively—this is a small series that requires great effort and dedication, making it hard to resist the moment one sees it. Mountains are not high when they are inhabited by immortals; books are not expensive when they possess character. Therefore, the series is named Shuyunlou (Book Charm Pavilion), and refined gentlemen will surely appreciate its meaning. This is the preface.
